Designing for a Byron downpour

When a summer cell parks itself over Cape Byron, a roof sheds more water in twenty minutes than some gutters see in a month. Capacity is the whole game: profile depth, fall that actually falls, outlets where the water arrives rather than where the plan said, and downpipes that can swallow the surge. A continuous run helps because there are no joins to weep under head pressure, but the sizing decisions matter just as much as the seamlessness.

Then there is the architecture. Byron builds run from original fibro beach shacks in the back streets to pavilion houses with skillion roofs, box gutters and knife-edge fascias where the gutter is part of the look. We roll clean lines that respect what the designer was doing, and we are comfortable saying so when a detail on the drawings will trap leaves or starve an outlet.

Overflow provision deserves its own sentence here. On high-rainfall rooflines we design escape routes for the water that arrives faster than any downpipe can drink: rain heads with weirs, slotted fronts on vulnerable runs, and overflow points positioned so a once-a-decade deluge spills harmlessly onto the garden instead of silently into the eaves.

Bay, beaches and back roads

The run covers Byron itself, Suffolk Park and Broken Head, then sweeps inland through Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal and Clunes. Hinterland acreage brings its own jobs: long shed rooflines, verandah returns on every face, and tank systems where the gutter is the first stage of the drinking water. Holiday homes and managed rentals are a steady part of the book, quoted and completed while the calendar shows a vacancy.
