Fascia
The board everything else hangs off
Fascia carries the gutter, finishes the roof edge and cops the weather for both. When it softens, nothing above it stays fixed for long.
Repair, cap or replace
Three levels, three price brackets, and the right one depends on how far the water has already got.
Repair suits isolated damage: one soft section behind a failed gutter join, a split board on a sun-hammered western edge. We cut out the bad timber, splice in new, prime and seal.
Capping wraps structurally sound timber in folded COLORBOND steel. The board keeps doing the carrying, the steel does the weathering, and the painting chore is gone permanently. Capping is the popular middle path when the timber is tired but true.
Replacement is for boards that flex when you press them. There is no point capping mush. New primed timber or steel fascia goes up, and it is the natural moment to fit new guttering since the old run has to come off anyway.
Why fascia suffers in this climate
Subtropical humidity keeps timber damp from the inside while summer sun flogs the paint from the outside, and the western edge of any house gets the worst of both. Paint systems that last a decade down south fade and chalk faster here, and once the film cracks, the board underneath starts drinking. That is why so much of our fascia work walks in the door as a small blister that turned out to be a metre of soft timber.
Why we check fascia on every gutter job
A gutter screwed to rotten fascia sags within a season, no matter how well it was rolled. Stripping the old gutter is the only time the whole top edge of the board is visible, so we inspect and photograph it as standard on every regutter and price any fascia work separately before proceeding. No surprises on the invoice, no new gutters on bad bones.
